Kurosaki Ichigo was born to Isshin Kurosaki and Masaki Kurosaki. He led a mostly normal life, with only one hitch: the death of his mother, Masaki Kurosaki, at the hands of Grand Fisher. Other than that traumatizing part of his life, he lived as a completely normal kid, with the ability to see ghosts. However, all of that changed when the Shinigami Kuchiki Rukia came into his life one day, hunting for a Hollow.

Through a series of unfortunate events, Rukia was wounded, and she is forced to transfer her powers to Ichigo. Ichigo is then saddled with Rukia’s work, as her powers were transferred to him… and this went on for the next two months, filled with battles and new allies for the continuous fight against Hollows, which include Inoue Orihime, Yasutora Sado, Kon, Ishida Uryuu, and the people of the Urahara Shoten.

However, this soon came to an end. Apparently, Seireitei had gotten wind of the fact that she transferred her powers onto a human, and in response they sent 6th division captain Kuchiki Byakuya and Lieutenant Abarai Renji in order to pick her up for her execution. Ichigo tried desperately to save her, but he failed, and they took off with her, and he was rendered into a powerless human soul. However, as he owed Rukia his life, he refused to back down without a fight. He became desperate to save Rukia, and in turn, accepted an offer by Urahara Kisuke to give him his own Shinigami powers.

The process was a success, giving him his own Shinigami powers, and his zanapkuto, Zangetsu. However, it was nearly at the cost of his soul, and it also made a Hollow inside him. After the training with Urahara, he went with Chad, Orihime, Uryuu, and Urahara’s ‘friend’, a black cat named Yoruichi, and snuck into to Seireitei. There, he took on one of the gatekeepers, Jidanbo, and won; however, they were prevented from entering Seireitei anyway, by 3rd division captain Ichimaru Gin. They find another way instead, provided by the Shiba family. Ichigo and the others are trained to focus their reiryoku, which Ichigo found very difficult to do. He managed it anyway, and after that, they are sent to Seireitei via a special spirit cannon that will help them get through the barrier.

However, once they had penetrated Seireitei, they were immediately separated into groups. Once they were separated, it became battle after battle for Ichigo, while running around with his ally Shiba Ganju and picking up a helper: Yamada Hanataro. He fought Madarame Ikkaku, and then Abarai Renji, after which he had his wounds healed by Hanataro. After he is healed, he i=then encounters Zaraki Kenpachi, and fights for his life. After the fight with Kenpachi, where they both admitted defeat to the other, he was rescued by Yoruichi, who then revealed her true form.

Right after that, Ichigo goes to the tower where Rukia is being held to save both Hanatarō and Ganju from Byakuya Kuchiki. However… he was not at full strength, and even though it went better than the first confrontation, Yoruichi still came to save him. She then whisked him away to train him in Bankai. Once the training was done, he then rushed off to save Rukia.

At the very last second, Ichigo flies in with one of Yoruichi’s artifacts and stops the Sokyoku from killing Rukia. Then he tossed Rukia to Renji and told them to run away from there. He dispatched the three lieutenants - Ōmaeda Marechiyo, Kotetsu Isane and Sasakibe Chōjirō - barehanded, and is then confronted by Byakuya. They have another battle in wherein Ichigo demonstrates his Bankai to Byakuya, who was impressed. However, despite that, he was still losing.

He was saved from death by something dark and sinister; a mask formed on his face as his inner hollow took over and started beating Byakuya. Ichigo then regained control and went into one final clash. Byakuya admitted that he lost, as his sword was destroyed by Ichigo’s. However, the joy is short as a message relayed through Kido revealed that this all was just an elaborate plot by Sosuke Aizen, who then confronts Ichigo and Renji. Despite their best efforts, they were effortlyessly dispatched by Aizen, who then extracts the Hogyoku from Rukia’s soul, and escapes Seireitei with Gin and Tosen Kaname.

After that fiasco, Ichigo and his human friends were sent back to the human world, after Ichigo was instated as a substitute Shinigami. Once he was back in the human world, he began to struggle with his inner hollow, and it in turn began to interfere in his fights. Despite that, he stubbornly refused help with it, even at first refusing Hirako Shinji’s offer to join the Vizards. However, his ensuing fights with Rialgo Yammy and Cifer Ulquiorra, and then with Grimmjow, finally convinced him to accept.

He had not come to join them, but just to use them to help him in order to gain control over his power. Eventually he succeeded taming his inner hollow, after a fight in his soul where Ichigo nearly died. He then trained it with the other Vizards in order to increase its duration. But even after a month of training, he still lost against Grimmjow. While he was recovering, Orihime is ‘persuaded’ to leave the human world and into Hueco Mundo, which spurs Ichigo and his human friends to go to her rescue.

Once there, they pick up Nel, and her ‘two brothers’ as they continue to head for Las Noches, Aizen’s base, and later on Renji and Rukia as well. They managed to make it to Las Noches, where they go their separate ways, Nel going with Ichigo. He then fights with an ex-espada, and wins, but is then defeated by Ulquiorra. Grimmjow then went to Ichigo with Orihime in tow, and after a brief scuffle with Ulquiorra and then healed by Orihime, both fight. Ichigo won, but is then immediately blindsided by Nnorita. He is no match for him, but Nel managed to show her true power and form, and almost beat Nnorita, if it weren’t for her reverting to child form. They are both then saved by Kenpachi, who then killed Nnorita after a lengthy fight.

However, Orihime was nabbed again by Ulquiorra, and all of them were locked in Las Noches, unable to go back and save Karakura as Aizen invades it. Ichigo then rushed to Orihime’s rescue, backed up by all of his friends. He managed to make it to Ulquiorra, where they both fight. Despite the fact that his control over his mask was greatly increased, and that he had grown stronger after fighting Grimmjow, he still was no match for Ulquiora. In fact, his situation steadily grew worse, especially when the Espada revealed his ressurecion, and the cero Oscuras. And it went from worse to nearly FUBAR, when Ulquiorra revealed his second form, Segunda Etapa.

Ichigo is then seemingly killed by an instantaneous cero Oscuras. Uryuu then attacked Ulquiorra, but to no avail, and seeing this, Orihime pleaded Ichigo to help. In response, his inner hollow took over in an entirely new transformation, and seemingly defeats Ulquiorra with ease. However… before he could kill the Espada, he is stopped by Uryuu, and in retaliation he is stabbed through the gut by Ichigo’s zanpakuto, which is still in Bankai. This led to a mostly regenerated Ulquiorra to defeat Ichigo, who then reverts to normal. Ulquiorra then handed Zangetsu to Ichigo and told him to finish the fight, but before they were able to, Ulquiorra dissolves.

After that, Yammy, who was sent all the way down by Uryuu, sensed his death, and was pissed. In response to that and to Ichigo’s other friends surrounding him, he used his ressurecion and turned into a monstrous behemoth. He then revealed that he was that the ranks go from 0 to 9, and that he was the 0 espada.
